Smit & Zoon – Product Passport

Smit & Zoon

Smit & Zoon is a leading provider of chemicals in the leather industry. These chemicals are added to the leather during the tanning process, rendering it more supple, softer or more elastic. Some of these chemicals stay behind in the waste water after the tanning process. Smit & Zoon has been a family business for over seven generations, which acts with future generations in mind. That is why they constantly try to find new ways to make the leather value chain more sustainable and to be more transparent about its impact on the environment. Smit & Zoon’s mission is to make the entire leather value chain sustainable by 2025.

Glasnost was asked to develop the Product Passport; an easy-to-use booklet with detailed information about the effects of the Smit & Zoon chemicals on the leather and the environment. This allows professionals in the leather industry, such as tanneries, waste managers or leather manufacturers to make a considered choice when they choose their chemicals. Glasnost developed a design that is easy to understand for everyone, even when you do not have extensive knowledge of chemicals or the tanning process.

To introduce the Product Passport within the industry, Glasnost chose to create a video with a leading role for Marc Smit, the 7th generation owner of Smit & Zoon. This makes the video authentic and personal, and makes it clear that sustainability is an intrinsic value within Smit & Zoon. As the Product Passport is used by many different people within the industry, the various links in the leather value chain are addressed; from researchers to leather workers and consumers of end products.
